I had no problem with Tom's performance - until he picked of the bass. The guitar interface just wasn't working for me.
I think that tere might not be a Moogfest 2013 (as they regroup and put the people in place to make everything happen just right). But - there is a Moogfest 2013 landing page at Moogfest.com / .org - so maybe they'll try something for 2013. If they do - I think Moogfest gets Halloween and MOEMS can go find some other date. I was getting the vibe in 2011 that everyone was just fine with Moogfest being an event that drew small numbers - it was more a 'celebrate and pay homage' feel than a 'must go to be seen' event. I think AC Entertainment wants the latter, and the Moog family / Inc are just fine with the former. I don't think MOEMS is going straight for any genre - they just want forefront artists regardless of their style or instrumentation. I suspect that MOEMS will be more about new acts (Death Grips, Divine Fits, etc) and less about the legacy acts (Tangerine Dream, Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Suicide, Harold Budd, Thomas Dolby, etc). I suspect both will feature local acts - with Moogfest veering more toward the keyboard musicians. But Moogfest also has to walk a fine line of not having too mnay legacy acts (which is what I feel might have done in the NYC event). People will travel to see an act one last time - as long as it doesn't break the bank. I think that is why it works in Asheville (besides - NYC has the CMJ Music Festival that attracts similar acts in the fall). However - I have become aware that there seems to be a festival every weekend nowadays. Well just have to see -- I'd love to celebrate my birthday at Moogfest again this year --- and I'm happy to wipe the slate clean and see what they pull off. As for MOEMS - I'll cast a weary eye towards whatever they do and see if they can pull it off - but I doubt I'll be there in person to see how they do.

I loved me some Squarepusher, but I could see where someone would not like it.
As far as the two fests, some people are theorizing that Moog is going to move the festival back to NYC where it started. It would certainly be easier to sell tickets there.
I have been wondering about what the lack of association will do for MOEMS. I am hopeful that they will keep what they have been doing up but branch out more since they do not have to keep things under the Moog-inspired label. I fear that they will change it too much since they are not constrained by the Moo-inspired label. Counterpoint being the month before in Atlanta leaves me more confident that they aren't going to go straight EDM fest since they would have some tough competition from them.

I wasn't able to go this year, but I was pretty impressed with the line-up. Sorry to hear that Squarepusher let you down! I saw him in 2004 and it was one of the best shows I've *ever* seen. I'm pretty curious to see what they do with this fest... call me greedy, but I hope both AC and Moogfest put on separate, amazing events

I did not like the 2012 version of Moogfest (especially in comparison to 2011). The bands I came to see kinda let me down (Squarepusher, Orbital). I didn't really 'discover' anything that I really wanted to dive into when I got back home. I was a bit turned off by the number of DJs (I realize that knob-twiddlers and keyboardists aren't terribly entertaining to watch many times - but I don't get a whole lot of satisfaction based on the energy of the crowd). I suspect that Moog Inc was similarly non-plussed.
I wasn't sure that I'd go to another Moogfest - but it looks like that decision may have been made for me. I'll definately come back to visit Asheville. I'm not sure I'll give MOEMS much attention - right now, I'm not sure who it was that fucked up 2012 for me (ACE, Ashley Capps, Moog Inc, Moog Music Foundation, Moog-Kousa, Asheville, the Arena, the security staff - but obviously someone else wasn't too happy either).

I wonder why they decided not to re-license the name?! I wonder if they're going to throw their own festival that is more focused on what we'd "traditionally" consider electronic music, as opposed to "the spirit of electronic music" (??)

From a follow-up email: -------
AC Entertainment, announced today that it will rename its multi-day electronic music festival in Asheville, NC, as the Mountain Oasis Electronic Music Summit for 2013, continuing to build on the success of the past three years when the event has been produced as Moogfest.
“The fans have embraced the festival with overwhelming enthusiasm during the past three years. They love the music, they love Asheville, and we are committed to continuing to evolve with them to create the very best festival experience that we can imagine, “ says AC Entertainment CEO, Ashley Capps.
From 2010 through 2012, Moogfest presented some of the greatest names in electronic music, hosting such artists as Massive Attack, Thievery Corporation, Orbital, Tangerine Dream, Jonsi, Richie Hawtin, Carl Craig, Brian Eno, and dozens of others. The event has featured educational panels, workshops, talks, installations, and art exhibitions in addition to numerous musical performances. Along the way the festival has received international acclaim from many publications, including NPR Music, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times.
The re-naming of the festival comes in the wake of Moog Music Inc. electing not to re-license the Moogfest name to AC Entertainment. “We received a letter from them following this year’s festival, so we have no choice really but to re-name it. We have enjoyed booking, marketing and producing our event for our fans and want to continue with them on this creative journey,” explains Capps. “We’re taking this opportunity to rethink the event a bit and challenge ourselves. While we are still focused on Halloween weekend, that time of year has its difficulties and we’ve been encouraged to consider other options. This part of the world is a very special place – hence the name, Mountain Oasis. We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished so far, and there’s so much more to explore.”
Details about Mountain Oasis Electronic Music Summit will be released in 2013.

we are so glad you guys from moog/ac/ashley came out for brunch. these fests are such an important part of all our lives, it is nice to have that recognized. hope we catch you around next year too!
but maybe the most mysterious of all is neither the small nor the large: it’s us, up close. could we even recognize ourselves, and if we did, would we know ourselves? what would we say to to ourselves? what would we learn from ourselves? what would we really like to see if we could stand outside ourselves and look at us? {another earth}

Re: Favorite show? « Result #14 on Nov 1, 2012, 8:13pm »
Initially, I was saying Squarepusher... but the more I think about it (and especially since having the NPR recording and review to go by), I'm leaning toward Morton Subotnick.
I guess it breaks down like:
1. Squarepusher/Morton Subotnick 2. Pantha Du Prince 3. Richie Hawtin 4. Blondes
The VIP section on the arena floor was pretty useless because it was off to the left and the crowd for any show i saw never got so packed that it would have been an advantaged sightline. I never used the VIP seats at the area at the top. The VIP at TWA was pretty nice, especially when shows went to capacity and you could use the back stair entrance straight from the VIP Lounge up to the TWA Balcony without anyone questioning you. And the seats were fantastic for viewing the TWA stage. I never went to the Orange Peel so Im not sure how the VIP was there.
imo the VIP lounge was amazing. free massages (with charity donation), food, candy, all you can drink vitamin water, and all you can drink beer/bacardi drinks/moonshine.
with the free tshirt and poster ($50 value) which i would have gouth anyways, that only makes the difference from a GA to VIP ticket for me about $70. And I definitely drank more than $70 worth of alcohol in teh VIP lounge considering the beers were $6 at the vendors. That pretty much makes all the other percs free for me.
There was a VIP floor section at Stage Left. I never saw anyone in it during Divine Fits, Orbital, Shplongle, or Pantha du Prince. The gf says no one was in the section during Primus and Santigold. The section only saw 1 to 3 Axis security personnel during every show that I saw in the arena.
Re: Favorite show? « Result #22 on Oct 29, 2012, 8:38pm »
I came to see Squarepusher and Orbital - Squarepusher kinda soiled my experience of his performance when he picked up the bass. My Orbital experience was tarnished by a confrontation in the VIP section.
I thoroughly enjoyed Divine Fits and Miike Snow.
I was non-plussed by Pantha du Prince (who's work I am somewhat familiar with due to it getting played on XM Chill Satellite Radio). Shplongle also did not impress me.
I would have liked to see Trust, but the schedule conflicted (plus after seeing Ana Sia, the gf didn't want to go to a venue without seats).
After listening to the NPR offererings (including the Buke & Gase and Death Grips sets 2 weeks previously at CMJ in NYC) - I'm realizing just how heavily loaded the 2012 offering was with DJs and knob twiddlers - and less of actual artists. Sure, even my beloved Tangerine Dream had parts of their performances coming from hard drives - but at least they recorded the music originally - whereas Disclosure, Richie Hawtin, Ana Sia, etc are just adding to someone else's original material. Maybe it is just the boredom from staring at a single performer vs a group with 3, 4, 5 performers. Maybe I should have skipped the 1 man acts (even Stott's NPR recording had me wondering if I really missed all that much by attending a different show). My girlfriend bailed on me a couple of times to pop her head in on Primus and Santigold. She didn't know either's material - but she reported back in both cases that they were just killin' it over there.
So - did I miss anything? The entire Hip-Hop track held no interest what-so-ever. El-P was a minor interest - but he came through my area (Dallas TX) at least 3 times this year, so I know I can catch him locally at a low dough show. Nas, GZA, Killer Mike - no interest.
It does sound like I would have had no chance to bounce over to the Orange Peel to catch Black Moth Super Rainbow based on capacity that did not move between Death Grips and GZA.
The only thing I know I did miss was several acts at the Emerald Lounge that had music online that caught my attention and I would have liked to catch - Aligning Minds, Futexture, and Sonmi.
I've attended 2 Moogfests now -- 2011, the experience was great (but the weather sucked). 2012, the weather was great (but the experience will make me heavily examine whether I will return for 2013).

Re: VIP « Result #23 on Oct 29, 2012, 4:57pm »
Thanks for that write up. I thought there was a new VIP section in the arena on the floor. Sounds like that changed? Sorry to hear about the railbirds. That would have definitely put me in a sour mood too. In any case, I'm really hoping to go next year, and that gives me an idea on the value of VIP. Much appreciated.
Plus you get the tshirt (that retails for $25) qnd the poster (that retails for $25).
The VIP entrance did prove a quick way in Friday (to cut the lines for both wristbands and entrance).
Saturday, we entered the Civic Center without an issue, but the rent-a-cops wouldn't let us down the ramp to get to the VIP Lounge - so we went back outside, came in the VIP entrance and walked right to the lounge (and pretty much had it to ourselves).
For those that got to the VIP Lounge early, Bacardi had some free earplugs from Ear Peace to ensure we left with our hearing intact (although I brought my own after having a painful experience with last year's Tim Hecker performance).
Additionally, Grooveshark was giving away sunglasses, koozies, lighters, rolling papers, bag. A local craft brewer also had some bottle openers.
And there was a spread of appetizers in the lounge with hummus, dill dip, chips, cherry tomatos, grapes, and lots of candy.
The lounge did make for a nice place to congregate between shows. It wasn't until midday through Saturday's schedule that we discovered the passage from the lounge to the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium.
The next door pandas overall were very respectful and quiet (thanks Nick - even if you didn't have to tell them to keep it quiet).
However, there were issues both nights with the Axis security staff and the ushers about checking VIP wristbands for access to the VIP seating sections. The effort was moderately better on Saturday vs Friday, but there was a major enforcement change regarding the railing and walkways in the VIP section. In 2011, there were no 'railbirds' allowed, but this year if you had a VIP wristband - you could get on the rail and obstruct the view of the seated VIPs. A confrontation over this issue erupted between myself and some doorag-wearing douchebag during the Orbital performance that left me in a sour mood for the remainder of the evening - as well as made the 2012 effort less enjoyable than the 2011 Moogfest - as well as made it questionable as to whether I would buy a VIP pass again or even bother to attend another Moogfest.
This year's VIP gathering had a better supply of beverages and pizza than last year. This year's museum location was not nearly as fun as last year's vintage video game arcade - but the Mellow Mushroom pizza and the endless Sam Adams beat out the sparse pizza and Shock Top from last year.
The sightlines were the same as last year in the arean and TWA - I'd rate the TWA the better venue since your view won't be obstructed by railbirds.

It was great seeing all of you there! In my excitement, I failed to check Infomoog once we were in Asheville. Thank you for everyone coming especially those who were new to our family including AC Entertainment! Moogfest was beyond amazing and I can't wait for next year!
FYI I did call and talk to the Mgr on the 21st. He failed to leave a note for the rest of the staff that we were coming but they handled it beautifully. What are your thoughts on having it at the same place next year? Suggestions and feedback welcome.
Well, the VIP merchandise was late (we did finally get it after 5pm yesterday). The letter that they give the VIPs to call if there are any problems did not contain a phone number. I see the VIP party is from 5pm to 7pm tomorrow, meaning we'll have to rush from the party to the first show. I have to see if this year's lounge (and the various beverages stocked there) make up for my current grumpiness. I loved my VIP experience in 2011 -- I'm not too happy with it in 2012.
Plus - my hotel room is next to a bunch of noisy pandas (and panda wannabes)

Yeah, check-in is really easy the first hour or so, but the line fills up quick after that. I'd say take care of it before you worry about checking in to you hotel. Or do it during Justice if you are going to that.
Re: Schedule Share « Result #34 on Oct 23, 2012, 3:02pm »
Yeah, I know the Masquerade is different. I just meant that his prior setups were conducive to changing heights to fit different stages, so it makes sense that he always creates them to allow that to happen.
Re: Check-in Info is posted « Result #37 on Oct 23, 2012, 2:55pm »
I went around 3-3:30 last year and walked in and walked right out no problem. Less than five minutes. It's the people that waited that had the issues...
Also, the new information if you're going to Justice:
Quote:
If you are continuing your amazing Asheville weekend by attending Moogfest 2012, you will be able to check in to the festival early in the U.S. Cellular Center lobby at the Justice show from 7pm to 10pm on Thursday, October 25. If you have a Weekend Pass or Friday single day ticket for the festival, please bring it with you on Thursday and you'll be able to grab your wristband before anyone else! (Please note: If you have a Saturday single day pass for Moogfest you can only check in on Saturday).
Re: Moog Brunch-LOCATION CHANGED « Result #41 on Oct 22, 2012, 7:47pm »
Bump because we had to update location. http://www.hannahflanaganspub.com/ is the NEW place and it is close to the Orange Peel. We should have plenty of room so if you are an already established member of infomoog, meaning we all know secrets and have pictures of you in compromising positions, BE THERE! If you are a lurker or new to our group, ready to be smothered in love and music geekery, BE THERE! Looking forward to meeting/seeing everyone!

It seems pretty much the same as last year. I'd show up at 3pm if you could. I seem to remember the line being kind of sluggish last year, but I could be remembering wrong.

This is my first year, so nothing to compare it to. Is this how check-in has worked in years' past? If i get in line around 3, can I expect for this thing to move along fairly quickly?
Hoping to get some time post-check-in, pre-Pantha du Prince, to grab a nap, some beers, etc...
I just received the nicest postal from Spencer & MF Spaceman from AC Entertainment... The letter mentions all of you, so I thought I would share:
"Jason, Sorry to hear you can't make it to Moogfest this year, but all of us at AC wish your dad the best. Fans like you and everyone else on Infomoog make festivals like Moogfest possible, so thank you for the support. Hope to see you in Asheville next October. Best, Spencer & MF Spaceman."
I am so touched, I'm speechless (well except for the words in this post)...
I was a little speechless myself when I saw you first post the pic on Facebook. It's truly amazing that they put in that effort.
